Environmental awareness is increasing exponentially in society, generating the need to obtain more sustainable products. One of the alternatives within the framework of Circular Economy is the development and use of bioplastics. Nowadays, there is a wide range of biodegradable and/or compostable products. These terms so use may cause confusion; that is why we must dive into every definition. 

In order to achieve a global knowledge of the state of biopolymers in different areas it is essential to know the appropriate terminology, the types of bioplastics, the required laboratory tests, the diverse elements intervening in biodegradation speed and rate according to the environment, the requirements to obtain the certifications as well as the recommended use for this type of products.
