One of AIMPLAS’ main roles is carrying out R&D projects both at a national and international level. AIMPLAS works with companies, universities, and technological centres in the development of innovative materials, the optimization of transforming processes and research for new applications.
Lines of research:
- Development and improvement of polymeric materials:
- Biodegradable materials and renewable sources. Biodegradables, biopolymers, sustainable composites with natural fibres and loads.
- Nanocomposites and functionalization of nanoparticles. Carbonaceous nanoparticles, nanoclays, nanometals, metallic nanooxides.
- Fireproof materials and smoke suppressors.
- Improvement of properties of traditional materials.
- Improvement of transformation processes:
- Dispersion and rheology of mixtures. Compounding of thermoplastic polymers and formulation of thermosetting resins.
- Processing of thermoplastic materials and continuous fibres. Thermoplastics infusion, continuous extrusion, over-injection.
- Development of composites advanced-curing systems.
- Development of singular processes. Technology for the reduction of viscosity (ultrasounds, use of CO2), elimination of volatiles, and physical foaming.
- Reactive extrusion. Functionalization of polymers or reinforcements, compatibilization of mixtures.
- Development of new products:
- Active and intelligent packaging. Advanced technologies of preservation and packaging: RFID, tightness and temperature sensors, release and collecting of substances.
- Multifunctional structures. Co-extrusion, co-injection, rolling, coatings.
- Products based on recycled materials.
